Plum Island Winter Maternity Session
BOSTON NEWBURYPORT MATERNITY PHOTOGRAPHER
Winter is upon us here in Massachusetts, and you’re wondering — can I still schedule an outdoor portrait session? Why, yes, you can! It’s true, some days and locations will work better than others, but if you keep in mind a few considerations, you can absolutely still shoot in the great outdoors this time of year.
First, and most important, is your tolerance for the cold! We all have our limits, but I’ve photographed sessions with the mercury in the teens and still lived to shoot another day. Sometimes, it could be you don’t have the option to schedule outside of winter. Maybe you’re visiting town and this is the only time of year you can gather family. Or, you’re expecting the arrival of your little one soon, and it’s now or never for that maternity session you were hoping to enjoy. Even better, there’s a fresh snow on the ground, and you’ve always wanted to capture the kids in action sledding down their favorite hill. No matter the reason, check the forecast to see if the weather would be agreeable to you and your loved ones. Windy days + freezing cold usually make for an uncomfortable combo and are best avoided.
Second, dress for comfort and warmth, while keeping in mind the style of wardrobe you want to see in pictures. My recommendation is to wear thermal layers underneath your camera-facing clothing, especially since most prefer not to wear their everyday winter jacket for the picture session. That said, stylish jackets, hats, shawls, and scarves all make for wonderful accessories. Choose footwear appropriate for the season and terrain, especially if there is snow.
For this maternity session on Plum Island and in downtown Newburyport, we had just the right amount of snow — enough to transform the landscape into something unique from its familiar summer counterpart. Minimal wind and full sun made for a comfortable morning outdoors, with the added bonus of no one else on the beach!
If considering an outdoor family portrait session in Boston during the cooler months, please feel free to get in touch, and I’d be happy to make some suggestions on creating a cozy shoot for this season!
