It’s important to have a plan heading into a wedding day. The so-called wedding “day-of” schedule lets everyone know where they need to be and when. With your guidance, this schedule is created in collaboration with your venue, your coordinator, and often with your photographer. This hour by hour timeline sets the pace for the day, sync vendors, and serves as a handy reminder of when to speed things up and also reassures when there is a moment to slow down and savor the moment. But even more important than having a day-of schedule is to recognize that rarely does a wedding day stick to the plan. Guests arrive late, or it’s taking you longer than expected to navigate terrain in your wedding shoes for portraits, or Mother Nature introduces a curveball requiring a last minute change. The day-of timeline sets desirable targets on paper, but being flexible is the real key to enjoying your actual day. Rather than stressing to conform to a preconceived notion of what you imagined your wedding day will be, let your day breathe and be open to discovery and the element of surprise.

L + J were wonderfully relaxed and incredibly easy to work with. Their personalities were on theme with their casual wedding at Crane Estate Steep Hill Beach, celebrating with family and friends while enjoying lawn games and summer eats. Steep Hill Beach is a private grassy nook, tucked away at the tail end of Crane Estate. The location offers a beautiful view of the ocean, and a short walk through the woods takes you right to the water. Our plan was to photograph portraits along the beach, which we did. But what wasn’t in the plan was when a boater, anchored just offshore, offered to lend their jet ski to L + J for a few spins in the bay. This entirely unplanned moment became one of the highlights of their day. I’m so glad L + J jumped at the chance to speed away on their own for a while and relish the surprise.
