Rye Harbor State Park Family Portrait Session

RYE, NH FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER

There’s an invaluable comfort that comes from working with repeat clients, particularly families with children. On a quiet weekend morning, I met this family for our third portrait session together, this time at Rye Harbor State Park in Rye, New Hampshire. Our first session was two years ago when their son was eight months old, and now here he is, nimble on his feet and quick to recognize me from our past adventures. Being familiar with my camera, there is an eagerness to engage with the lens, and he knows there is an open invitation to be as silly and playful as he likes. Why else would he repeatedly torpedo the football in my direction and laugh? Because he knows me, and this makes for great moments in pictures. Keeping throwing — I’m all for it!

Being familiar — or at least comfortable with your photographer if this is your first session together — inspires trust and a willingness to be yourself for the camera. When you have confidence in the person you’ve invited along to document a day with your family, the camera becomes secondary and your focus remains with loved ones. When your photographer asks you to jump high in the air or wade into a patch of marsh grass you wouldn’t normally tromp through, you’re more than willing to give it your all when your prior experiences together have been rewarded with great pictures.
