Though the year of social distancing, these months have also been a welcomed opportunity to be nearer to those we love. Intimate get-togethers with our closest friends and family have replaced larger gatherings — and weddings have been no different. Some couples made the decision to postpone their wedding until next year, or even elope, while others reimagined their special day on a smaller, but no less memorable scale. Termed by some as a “mini-wedding”, what was originally planned for many couples to be a full-day, to-the-max-guest-count event, became a four to five hour celebration, with fewer attendees and a tailored, no-dance-floor reception.

C & J’s event was once such mini-wedding this year, hosted at the stunning Beauport Hotel in Gloucester, and I must say, in spirit, there was nothing “mini” about this beautiful event. The bride and groom still enjoyed the excitement of getting ready, they still shared an emotional first look and outdoor ceremony overlooking the water, and they welcomed the loving company of close family and friends to bear witness to their vows. After months of planning, re-planning, and evaluating restrictions, I was so happy to see C & J’s day come to unfold and their efforts rewarded with a gorgeous September celebration.

There is certainly still a place for what has become the larger, contemporary wedding. But if there is a valuable lesson to be learned from this year of limitations, it’s the reminder that a wedding at its heart is an exchange of vows — and there is by far more than one way to frame the size and scope of your celebration. And so when the days of “normal” return, I would encourage all to remain focused on thinking “mini” and staying close to what’s truly important to us.

Congratulations again, C & J!
