Crane's Beach Senior Portrait Photography

IPSWICH, MA SENIOR PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHER

What a great day for a senior portrait session at the beach! Collin suggested we shoot his senior pictures at Crane’s Beach in Ipswich, which is always a favorite location not only for its beautiful beaches, but for the dunes and nature trails a short walk from the sand and shore.

As an on-location photographer, I love working with natural light. Rather than hauling along flashes and bounce umbrellas to a session, I prefer shooting with the available light, which means scheduling the session at a time when the natural light is at its best for photography: either morning or late afternoon. By shooting at these times, you’ll avoid squinting and the harsh facial shadows created by the high midday sun. Portrait sessions are also a lot more comfortable for everyone during the cooler parts of the day. Also, because beaches are so open with no shade or cover, the sun is often still harsh right up until it sets. For this reason, beach sessions (especially in summer) are best scheduled to start a half-hour before sunset. There’s still plenty of light on the beach just after sunset, and you can just about shoot in any direction and achieve soft, flattering photos.

The other benefit to using natural light verses flash kits is mobility. A variety of poses can be photographed when you’re not having to wait for the flash setup to be adjusted for each one. Using natural light, we can also do in-motion poses, with you walking and being yourself while I shoot images. Posing for the camera is no longer on your mind. And I’m focused on you, not the gear. The end result is photographs that are more natural, genuine, and truer to the subject’s personality.

Thank you, Collin, for choosing to work with me. For those visiting my blog, please do reach out to me if you’d like to collaborate on your senior portraits or graduation portraits!
