PLUM ISLAND FAMILY PORTRAIT SESSION PHOTOGRAPHER

More often than not this year, many of my family portrait sessions have been with visitors from out of town (or with those visiting family here in Massachusetts). With all of the restrictions and limitations on the usual summer social activities, it’s no surprise families are spending more time enjoying activities with each other. And one of those intimate, fairly socially-distanced activities has been photo shoots! Portrait sessions can mean so much more than “going to get our pictures taken”. Instead, think of a portrait session as a family pastime — going to the movie, amusement park, mini-golf — a chance to hang out, have fun, and enjoy yourselves.

I had a fantastic time with the K. family during their long weekend visit to a Plum Island rental. Plum Island, of course, is a favorite portrait location, with its sprawling beaches and panoramic dunes. I always get a kick out of kids at portrait sessions because, understandably, they’ll sit for a few posed shots, but what they really want to do is be themselves, run around, and play. And that’s perfectly okay and also what we should want — a few shots of everyone together, but for the most part, let the session unfold like any other family activity, an event where everyone can relax and lose themselves in the moment. The camera will be there, providing inspiration, gentle direction, and snapping away. Even for those sessions with just adults, a mix of posed and casual moments makes for an experience that is just as memorable as the pictures you’ll ultimately receive.

Thank you again, K. family — I hope you had a wonderful time together in Massachusetts!
